Abstract:
"This book treats of Danish administrative history, especially under the Kings Christian IV (1596-1648) and Frederick III (1648-1670) until the introduction of Absolutism (1648-1660). It focuses on the chancelleries, in particular the so-called „German“chancellery, and on the Kings’ „Dan ish“ and „German“ chancellors’ relationship to the „Danish“ and the „German“ chancelleries. Through the analysis of a comprehensive con temporary documentary material an attempt is made to clarify this rela tionship. It is concluded that the assumption, generally held since the nineteenth century, that there was a parallelism between the two chan celleries and between the King’s Danish and German chancellors, is not tenable, and that both chancelleries, in so far as they dealt with matters concerning the domestic and foreign affairs of the kingdoms of Denmark and Norway, belonged under the King’s Danish chancellor as one joint royal chancellery. The King’s position as also a German prince of the Em pire in the Duchy of Holstein created a demand for a special administra tion of this Duchy and of the administratively connected duchy of Slesvig. Added to this were also foreign affairs, especially in relation to the Em peror and the German Imperial provinces, which during the thirty Years’ War assumed great scope and importance, and in which the German chancellor and the German Chancellery played an important part, being frequently based in the King’s newly founded fortress town of Glückstadt on the Elbe.
